Foraging for food is a recent obsession of mine, but the truth is I have very little experience with it and living in a city does not give me many opportunities, but I don't want either to get in my way. Ever since the sun came out on a regular basis I began looking for places where I could pick berries myself, because the fruit that comes is much more unique than what you find packaged behind plastic with a big company label on top. You get imperfections and various shades of colours and shapes that are endearing and beautiful. I am not attempting to write a post against big corporations though I am more interested in the simple joy foraging food brings that is romantic in a way that picking flowers is especially bringing them home to lavish on yourself or someone else you love.
I try to ignore the fact that blackberries have seeds and focus instead on how delicious they taste, which is close to a raspberry, but with a little more sweetness if they are actually ripe. As much as I want to try to leave them in their natural state I can't help, but think of how I could be a little domestic goddess and turn them into jam or crumble. I hope to practice my baking skills before blackberry season is over, but until then I may need some inspiration. What is your favourite way to eat this lovely black fruit?
My lovely friends Sarah and Charis know this particular part of East London better than me so I followed them from Homerton station to the canal where we found blackberry after blackberry.

Oh how lovely! I'm thinking a blackberry galette would be nice, or blackberry ice cream!
I would really love to go berry picking, but where I live it's simply too hot that there are no place to do it locally. Way down south (about 5 hours away from my hometown) there are blueberry farms. I really wish to go one day.

You can never go wrong with a blackberry and apple crumble, that's definitely our favourite! Where we live in Sheffield you can pick the berries from someone else's front yard (as long as it's sticking out of the road they wouldn't mind!) and from the numerous pathways in the woodlands close to the city centre so we're always spoilt for choice. But I do agree it's such a nice feeling being able to pick your own food and whipping up something with it afterwards!
You are so right! I have heard that apple and blackberry is a great combo and it is my goal now to try it out. Thanks for your advice and lucky you for being able to pick your own berries whenever you like :D.
A blueberry farm sounds absolutely lovely. I hope you can go one day! Now I'm inspired to find out if there are any blueberry farms in the UK ;-) xx
